103 in Cologne-Nippes

Description

Last Friday, 103 235 departed towards Flensburg.

It would return on Sunday, when it's already dark around here. However, in between, namely on Saturday, I had the chance of shooting 103 184. It was on a rather long journey to Chur in Switzerland, after having taken over the TEE Rheingold special train at the Dutch-German border. 103 184 by the way is the only class 103 locomotive that can be used in Switzerland, having been fitted with a Swiss pantograph, which has a narrower contact shoe than the German one. This also means that only one of the two pantographs can be used in either country, and sometimes, namely in 50% of all cases, you can spot this loco with the "wrong" pantograph raised:

On this most recent photo, you can see two things. First of all, the "correct" pantograph is being used. Furthermore, I didn't shot the train at my usual photo spot, simply because it didn't run through Leverkusen. It did however cross through Cologne. So, could one shoot it at Cologne Central Station, like so?

No, sadly not. The sixteen car train took the back roads, sneaking through Cologne in a ways that make it difficult to photograph. The nearest photo spot for me was Köln-Nippes, a destination you may know from looking at photos like this one, or perhaps that one, maybe even this one here. Yep, it's the terminus of the class 143 hauled S-Bahn line S6, which stops two streets from my house, and which therefore got me here and back home. This was the first time I ever visited this station, and I arrived at the following conclusion:

Cologne-Nippes isn't a very nice place. There's a huge brothel in a high rise building, run down housing, and of course an industrial estate, as you can see on the photo. The weather was equally rubbish, but the TEE Rheingold special train did brighten things up, when it arrived about 30 minutes behind schedule. However, thanks to the awesome powers of the 103, they somehow managed to reduce that to zero minutes later on.

Some more shots to be found in my DSO post, as always.
