Airbags?

Description

Where we're going, we don't need airbags!

The high tech cockpit of the borrowed 15 year old VW Polo that we used to drive from Budapest to Kecskemét to visit my aunt and cousin. Its favourite speed is below 90kph (56mph), go any faster and everything starts shaking and rattling, amids overly pronounced engine noise from the monstrous 999cc powerplant at the front. Also, the clutch is extremely worn and vague, some of the dashboard lighting doesn't work, the wipers do more harm than good, and there are patches of rust here and there. Interestingly, the car has a very low mileage for its age, clearly showing that city driving is the best way to ruin your car. Though the biggest problem here is the owner not taking that much care of it. And the person who first bought it apparently thought that airbags were too expensive, as they weren't standard equipment back then.

It's in a better state than a few years ago though. This is the third time I drove it, first time was also in the midst of winter two or three years ago, and the heater was broken... Now, despite the bad general state of the car, everything works. More or less. It even starts without producing a huge plume of smoke!

Still, I quite liked to drive this car. A simple and honest car has its very own charm, at least to me.

It reminds me of the 1990 Honda Civic I got back in '06. Its rear bumper was falling off, the clutch was worn out, the headlight optics were yellowed, but it still ran and was fun to drive. I had to replace the front brakes, including calipers, rotors, and pads; I had to replace a few light bulbs; but the end was nigh when I decided to replace the plugs and wires, only to discover that one of the plugs was rusted in cross threaded. It snapped in two inside the head, and with only three cylinders firing, it just wasn't any good anymore.
