has already submitted anumberofpics from yesterday's tour to Wuppertal, so I had a hard time finding something that isn't either boring or very much like one of his photos. One of the nicer shots I found among mine was this one, looking down the tracks towards the terminus "Vohwinkel" from the station "Bruch". I liked the depth, and the advantage of the Schwebebahn being above the ground being so apparent. This was on a Saturday, but as you can imagine, when traffic comes to a stop during rush hour, it must be humiliating for car drivers to see trains rush past above them every few minutes.
The only means of transport that is even better, but more expensive and with less nice views from the window would of course be a subway. The original thought was to build one in Wuppertal as well, but geological conditions didn't permit it. As the streets were crowded, a railway running over an elevated track, like the "El" in New York, was proposed, but then another idea arrived: A top suspended monorail. Avantgardistic for its time, and unique till this day, this means of transport has been operating for over 100 years, and saw only one fatal accident ever! Safer than anything else on the planet.
Thanks very much, it is pretty unique, though sometimes I wonder why the concept didn't spread throughout the world a bit more... BTW, a really nice historical gem of this Schwebebahn is the beautifully restored and maintained "Kaiserwagen", with which the Emperor himself took the first ride on the then new means of transport: [link] Absolutely beautiful to me
Well, it's probably a lot easier to roll trains on the bottom instead of the top. Easier to manufacture too I would think..It DOES look very nice, though.
Jup, less materials needed for the undercarriage (or rahter overcarriage) and not as much noise as real trains, though these can be somewhat noisy as well. But keep in mind that this is often the original construction from 1900, so just think about the possibilities one would have with modern materials and building methods...
Und ich erzähl noch einem anderen hier, von wegen weltberühmt ist das zwar nicht, aber in DLand kennt es vermutlich jeder... Jetzt hast du mir alles versaut! ^^
