Artist's Comments

Thanks to :iconzcochrane:, I shot this in raw format, allowing me to adjust a great many things, my favourite tool this far being fill light. Normally, I'd either overexpose the sky, but have good lighting on the undercarriage, or have the picture as such exposed just right, with too many details getting lost in the shadows. I hope you can forgive a little editing. :D

I also adjusted exposure & contrast a bit, rotating and cropping the pic slightly. Hit download for original size, if you wish to see all the details.

As far as the engine is concerned, what more can I say than this being the most famed workhorse that the DB ran into the ground by cutting maintenance costs (read: not maintaining them properly, until they broke down). The class 103, a six axle high speed beauty with ten thousand horses under the hood, though you could even squeeze out 16k for a short time if you're good... I just love the looks of this machine, powerful and graceful at the same time. :)

I also visited the Bender, they have torn up the first two class 143s and the next 110 in the row has been reduced to a cabriolet: [link]

Oh yes, that ruby and cream paint scheme was very fitting indeed, I think everyone likes it. :) Too bad some of these units were repainted with the rather ugly "orientrot" [link]

Thanks for the :+fav:!

Urgh, that is very ugly! D:

It's amazing how much a livery can effect the whole look of a loco!

Yep, I think that era was a time of ugly liveries for engines and carriages alike, though the blue ones in that photo look quite okay. Regional stock was mostly painted mint-green, which really didn't look very nice, and the orientrot paint scheme didn't really suit any engine. Not to mention the fact that the sun was very hard on it, the paintjob quickly fading and loosing colour. Even today, a handful of engines still run with very, very worn orientrot liveries: [link] Germans call these "piggies", because they're almost pink. However, at least to my knowledge, all 103s that are still active with the DB or for railroading clubs have the nice ruby+cream Rheingold paint. :)

Sehr gut gemacht!
