So I looked around on DSO and stumbled across someone mentioning a steam engine, namely 41 360 [link] currently being en route, pulling a special train. Sure enough, after checking the appropriate web pages, it is scheduled to run today, and I was almost certain that it would pass through Leverkusen.

Packed my stuff, jumped on my bike, rode to one of my favourite spots to wait for the train to turn up. I even took my compact, using the gorillapod to attach it to a catenary post, so I could have it record a video as well. Shot some standard stuff, like an ICE which I also posted on DSO [link] but the sky got darker and darker...

It started to rain. Then, it really started to pour, so I hastily put on my rain gear, opened my little umbrella, yanked the compact from the catenary pole... Is that a train coming? ...using my third hand to lift and aim the camera, peering through the viewfinder, trying to get at least some shots of what is definately not a steamer, with my cheap SD card being overburdened just when the engine was nice and close. It's a class 110 (former E10) electric, a preserved unit with the old blue livery. Only after I posted these on DSO, someone told me that this was indeed a part of the steam train, but from Oberhausen onwards, this part travels electric.

I'm wet. And not happy.

But one feels kinda cool after such a heroic failure.

Aww that's a bummer. I really like these two photographs if that's any consolation.

Have you seen J.M.W Turner's painting called "Rain, Steam, and Speed"? It's of a steam train in a rainstorm.

Thanks. :) I actually do have some photos of the steamer, so it might even be luck that I caught this one for my collection. First time I see a blue 110 on the rails instead of inside a museum.

I looked it up on the net, but it doesn't really look very rainy or stormy, maybe because of the colours. More like a sandstorm to me ^^

Na ja, leider ist es nicht so super geworden wie ich es gerne hätte, und ob es sich gelohnt hat dafür nass zu werden... Na ja, immerhin hab ich jetzt auch ne blaue 110er mit alten Lampen in meiner Sammlung. :XD:

Ich glaube das andere Bild von heute ist auch ganz schön geworden, auch wenn ich dafür sehr wenig machen musste ^^

You got some good frames here despite the weather and subject. I certainly wouldn't mind having pictures like this in my collection, but alas, nearly everything through Heidelberg is ordinary equipment...though there are lots of 110-hauled silberling consists.

Thanks, though I really wanted to have that one shot in which the engine was a good lenght closer to me, but that's just when the "load" sign kept blinking in the viewfinder :XD: Such is life I guess, I should wait till it gets closer before trying to shoot, instead of having many shots in which the train is too far away. I don't really know why, but I can't resist shooting much too early for some reason...

Then were are those 110 photos dude? :D :D :D

Granted, they're probably boring if one sees them all the time, but at my place, there's exactly one 110 with silverlings that comes by here, and that's it.
