Description

I went to the Cologne Bonn Airport today, just to see what lighting conditions were like in the afternoon. Sadly though, the main observation deck was closed, apparently because they're installing even taller glass walls around the perimeter. I guess they're worried that photographers might fall down, as many bring ladders along to avoid having to shoot through dirt and reflections. I wonder why Düsseldorf can do without turning their observation deck into a phone booth...

Anyways, I was able to find the other observation deck, which has a rather hidden entrance, not to mention a not-so-great view, compared to the main one. After wandering around for a bit, I was on the verge of just leaving, when some landing lights appeared in the distance. Peering through my viewfinder, I could make out that it was something high-winged and four engined, but too large to be the BAe 146 that one would commonly expect. And when it got close enough for me to realize what it was, I just kept it clicking till the thing disappeared behind the airport building.

What we have here is an Ilyushin Il-76TD-90VD, registration RA-76951, operated by Volga-Dnepr Airlines. A strategic airlifter from the 1970s, used predominantly for heavy and bulky cargo that wouldn't fit into regular sized transport planes. Interestingly, this specimen is just over four years old! Never realized that they still make these, but the fact that it hardly made any noise did reveal that the engines were up to date.
