Artist's Comments

Probably the last pic I wasn't quite satisfied with, but wanted to share it nonetheless. I wanted to give an overall shot of the everyday madness around here, keeping in mind that almost as many engines are behind me in the fenced off and camera surveiled area.

The first four in the row are class 140 freight engines, the three thereafter (one red and two blue/beige) are class 110 designated for passenger service, and the last is a class 115, a renumbered class 110, that received a different number for buerocratic reasons only. The main difference between the two ist the altered gear ratio, as the 140 has a lower top speed but can give you a higher traction force. The 110 also has an electric brake, something the 140 lacks, though some have been built from the other, so ex-110s with altered gearing for freight duty, which are known as 139.

You might also notice that blob of slightly darker sky just above the trees. Its caused by a dust particle thats either stuck in the lens assembly, or directly to the sensor, in any case, I can't get to it, and its quite menacing at times. If you take a look at this older pic [link] , you can see that very same blob at the same spot. I hate dust particles :(

Any suggestions/wishes/recommendations/comments concerning future photos? I think I've uploaded those that meet my rather high standards of quality, while the other 90% of my pics are either not that good or contain the same object, so are probably not really interesting for you. Image size OK, would you prefer smaller, would you like the original size for download? If you have some time to spare, share some of your wisdom with me :)

I'd like to ask exactly what ratio you have your full view set to on this? As I may use it on future submissions. I feel the standard one I'm using now (I think 600x800?) is a bit small, and that actually this size is much better. :)

Keep on doing what you're doing. Size is good - not too enormous, but big enough to get detail on the subject.

I use the full image size for full view, 1200*900, as thats the size I felt is the best deal between keeping details visible and the image sharp. Some of my pics are downloadable in their original size 3072*2304, but I often feel that full size is not that good as it shows how little edge sharpness my camera has. Nevertheless, I thought about updating my pics and enable a somewhat larger download, but I don't know whether thats worth it. I might do it on newer pics though.

Now that you mention it, your pics are a bit small, though one could always just download, but I really don't know how large the average screen is. I also heard someone say to me that my pics were too large to fit his screen, and that got me thinking that normal for me might be too large for someone else, as I've got a pretty big screen. I think I'll keep this size and offer a full download when I think the image is worth it like I did until now.

It's not only screen size, but a question of resolution and availability. Whereas I run my 15.4" screen at 1024x768, a lot of others on possibly older machines may have a 14" screen running at the base 800x600. The first I knew of the resolution clash problem was during my GCSE ICT course at college, where I was doing website design. The website I designed was created on an 800x600 screen, and when I attempted to view said site on my laptop using 1024x768, the 'My Links' page I'd set up perfectly before was all screwed up, with images appearing in the improper places, often covering up vital text.

The availability issue concerns the explorer a particular person uses. If like me, they have Microsoft Internet Explorer with a ton of toolbars, then space to view the webpage itself is going to be limited. As a thought on this subject, I have now disabled all the toolbars I was not using, which has drastically increased the amount of a webpage that I can see at any one time. :XD: I may also go back across my pictures and, if slowly, change them to a higher resolution full view setting.

Ah, GCSE, that brings back memories of my time in the UK at a boarding school :XD: Though I was in lower sixth of course. I also had ICT lessons, but only on using Word, Excel an PowerPoint, I don't have any idea on how to design a webpage :(

I don't have any toolbars that I don't use with ff, but I don't really have space issues either ever since I got my new screen :XD: Though I still think it would be cool if it were even larger :D But as far as I'm concerned, if you have the full size image available for download, there is no real need to set the full view to a higher resolution. I think I'm the only one who insists on using the original image in full view most of the time ;)

This just looks so forlorn, decrepit. Great use of the sun for illumination!

The image sizes are just fine for me!

BTW, next time, mow the weeds down before you take pics. :P

Decrepit, now thats a word I didn't immediately know :XD:

Thanks, the lighting was the reason for me being there, as it was one of the first sunny days after a long period or rain and cloud cover.

And yes, I'll surely mow the weeds next time :D Though I don't think they're too happy about people trespassing all the time, let alone mowing down their precious weeds.

I was just looking at this picture, and a thought struck me. It's amazing to me how many electric locomotives are being scrapped over where you are; here in the USA, I don't think I've EVER heard of an electric being torched. I believe the only mainline electrics we have are the Amtrak Acelas(at least they're the only ones I know of.)and those are all only about ten years old at the very most.
