Mystery Train

Description

This thing was one of the more mysterious artefacts we came across in Hamm, a grey, windowless train, with stickers saying that one may not uncouple the individual cars from each other, and that one may not be on board when the train is moving. I immediately knew that it must be a former exhibition train, but had no idea what exhibition it might've been. I remembered a similar train running for AEG in the past, but looking it up, it didn't quite match, with those cars being regular ones with windows. Thankfully though, I did record some of the wagon numbers, and after doing a bit of research, I was able to determine the former identity of this train. In fact, I've been inside it, and shot it several times four years ago!

Remember this?

That was the Science Express, a rolling exhibition full of neat looking but ultimately boring stuff, at least if you're an actual scientist. The cars were overhauled and fitted with specialized interiors for this purpose, as well as being covered with a new "livery". Not actual paint but printed foil that was stuck to the outside. Two class 110 locomotives were also redesigned externally for this train, and I managed to shoot both of them, 110 325 while the train was standing in Leverkusen and 110 329 while it was open for visits in Cologne.

By now, the locomotives have been scrapped...

...and the remains of the train are standing around outside, waiting to be re-used or scrapped. Looking at DB's track record, I'm quite certain that they'll be scrapped without further use.

Also note the reflection of some yellow and blue cars, which are former Dutch InterCity cars, which are actually former Interregio cars from Germany, still with original interiors but different livery.

Without even reading your caption, I figured it was the Science Express train, which I photographed in Heidelberg. :)
