Huh. For the second time, I realized that I had shot something not quite everyday while editing my photos from Dresden, as it happened before with the former 180 001. Well, when I say not quite everyday, I'm only referring to the numbers in this case, with this unit being the first locomotive of its class, as indicated by the serial number 001.

The class 245 is basically the diesel version of the widely used family of Bombardier TRAXX locomotives, which I consider to be very boring, which annoys me greatly, as you can find them around each corner in Germany and other countries. As you can plainly see, it looks exactly like its electric counterpart, minus the pantographs, with the manufacturer stating that 70% of its components have been directly carried over from the TRAXX program. Production has commenced in 2012, with 200 units having been ordered. This in turn means that the few interesting old diesel locomotives will soon be replaced by something that looks like a very boring electric without pantographs, a very frightening prospect indeed. Couldn't they have built a diesel locomotive that looks like a 103?*

In terms of technology, it's very modern compared to most diesel locomotives, which usually have one prime mover. That's great if you run your locomotive at its limit all the time, but that's rarely the case, which means that one huge prime mover is also a huge waste of fuel under certain circumstances. To get around this problem, this locomotive has four smaller engines that are switched on and off according to demand, a concept the Americans among you may already know as a genset locomotive.

*They actually did just that back in the 1980s, with an experimental high speed diesel locomotive receiving an aerodynamic nose on one end that was based on the 103, easily reaching speeds of 250kph/155mph. It also had a highly advanced undercarriage which could mechanically couple the drive motors to either the bogie or the locomotive frame, to gain insight on high speed propulsion techniques. This is much more interesting than the 245!

About just as exciting as a run-of-the-mill GP38 or an Amtrak AMD109. Yeah. Boring. Sleepy
