Yeah, I do realize that this was taken from the exact same spot as yesterday, though in the evening rather than in the morning. Still, I kinda liked the shot, despite it being backlit, as all the little details on the train are well visible.

As I found out recently, two dozen of these older trains have recently moved here from Stuttgart, where they have been replaced by more modern EMUs. Here, there are used as rush hour booster trains and to supplement the existing rolling stock on a few S-Bahn lines. It was a real pleasure to read about how the number of trainsets kept increasing, with their status going from parked to active as time passed.

In case you didn't read my previous babble, this train type originated in the 1970s, introduced for the Olympic Games in Munich, and thus dubbed "Heiliger ET", the holiness being attributed to the deeply Catholic south of Germany. Not that long ago, early series examples could be found in my area on a regular basis, until they were replaced, retired and scrapped by 2009. After years of complete abstinence, these late series specimen are now making their way back into one of the original places of action where these trains once ran. So even though this unit here is of the 7th type series that was built between 1989 and 1993, it still has the unchanged characteristic front with those wrap-around windshields and the two creases running horizontally and vertically along the cab, meeting in the center just under the DB logo. In this huge sea of modern EMUs (that I find to be somewhat boring), it's kinda refreshing to see such old stock still having some time left to be useful before being thrown in the furnace.

I also like the (at times weird) details on this train, such as only one pantograph being present on the central car (one train consists of three permanently coupled units), while there are still two spaces for pantographs. As time passed, it was decided that two pantographs weren't necessary, as only one was being used while running, so one was removed, but all the high voltage equipment, the roof lines and switches all stayed in place, making it seem like something is missing. Also, there is no way for passengers to move from one car to the other, as visible in this scrapyard shot, allowing a rare view of the individual cars being separated from each other (also showing the lack of second pantograph). Normal people would have installed doors and bellows between the cars, but in the 70s, they must have thought that people were too lazy to move between cars or something (no, I don't have an explanation). Still, I quite like to ride these as a passenger (unless it's really hot, which makes the lack of A/C quite unbearable). I like the mechanical door handles rather than inductive (non-moving) buttons, I like the click-clack sounds of the powere controller instead of just electronic whining, in short, I like the distinct mechanical feel of these old machines.
