Sunset in Reuschenberg

Looking at how the photos I took today were hardly any different from those of the last two or three days, I thought I'd upload a non-train pic for a change. If you're still interested in some class 110 and 143 action, check out my latest DSO post.

So, what do we have here then? Well, it's the Reuschenberg Manor, containing mostly stables and other equestrian facilities. It's located right next to the four track mainline that I often visit, and I cross this bridge on my bike every time I come by. There was also a small castle nearby, the Schloss Reuschenberg, which was a highly popular weekend getaway back in the day. It was torn down in 1968, as damages sustained in WW2 were not mended. There's a small memorial near the stables that stand here now, incorporating some stones that once made up the castle walls.

The river in the foreground is actually the millrace of the Reuschenberg Mill, branching off the river Wupper at a weir further upstream. The mill that exists today was built in 1847, highly advanced for its time, using turbines instead of classic waterwheels. Till the 1930s, it was used as paper mill, and fell into disrepair after closure. Thankfully, it has been beautifully restored, now being an protected industrial monument. The turbines are still in place, being used to generate up to 1,6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.
