Description
Düsseldorf.
A city with one of Germany's finest public transport systems, a dense network of trains, trams and buses, with some tram lines also doubling as subways. As everywhere in the developed world, the system did suffer when cars caught on, the city being littered with former depots, now being used for something else, as well as the remains of former lines being embedded in many roads.
Nevertheless, the network now in place is still very dense, and riding these now forty year old but still quirky trams through those tight curves is something like a carnival ride for railfans. The eight axle articulated motorcar we see here was built towards the end of the 1960s, departing from Düsseldorf Central with a four axle trailer in tow. One can see these regularly during weekdays, but not for long now. They are to be replaced by modern low-floor trams by 2011, with the old ones to be sold to Poznan.
In case you're wondering: The German banner is usually only flown on special occasions, such as national holidays. Seems like the footie world cup was also special enough to add the flags.
