Description
I'm sure you all know the famed Soviet-made Ludmilla.
There was exactly one of these in the long line of diesel locomotives we saw in Hamm last weekend, and after a bit of fettling, we were able to open one of the four doors.
This is the view that greets you in the engine room, the Kolomna 5D49 prime mover, a 16-cylinder, 221 liter, four-stroke, fuel-injected, turbocharged and intercooled monstrosity, producing 3000hp. We're looking at it from cab no. 1, which means that this is the cylinder block A. If you want to know what this beast sounds like, turn up the volume and enjoy! Later on, some were upgraded to produce 4000hp, which made them the most powerful single-engined locomotives in Europe, at least until the Voith Maxima came along, which could produce 4800hp from one prime mover.
In other news, I'll be gone until Wednesday, with no internet access, which also explains why I uploaded a few more pics in the last day or two. Normally, I try to upload only one pic per day, as I always felt that views and favs decreased exponentially when you upload several pics in short succession. In this case though, I couldn't really help it.
So if you get bored while I'm gone, help yourself to some of my previously uploaded pics!
